10 Authors I’m Thankful For

Happy Top Ten Tuesday everyone! And happy almost Thanksgiving!! This weekly meme was created by The Broke and the Bookish

This week’s theme: Thanksgiving freebie!

1. J.K. Rowling

I mean, obviously. I cried when I was 13 and never got my Hogwarts letter. Her Harry Potter universe just became such a big part of me and I really thought it existed for a solid portion of my life. Her characters have stuck with me for years, and will probably stay with me for the rest of my life.

2. E.D. Baker

The king of children’s books, basically. I read every book of his I could get my cross, little-kid fingers on. I have good memories reading (and rereading) his books. His stories were always so funny and magical.

3. John Green

Many moons ago, before The Fault in Our Stars came out, I was an avid watcher of his vlogs on YouTube. I had watched literally all of them at one point. I got to see him workshop TFIOS and talk about its release and go on tour and joke around with his brother (who is actually probably cooler than him). It was such a journey. And of course I had to get an autographed copy of TFIOS after all that. (Thanks, mom!)

4. Madeleine L’Engle

Will I ever stop mentioning A Wrinkle in Time?? Probably not. But that series meant so much to me. It introduced me to the fantasy genre and made me realize I want to be a writer so i could create worlds as beautiful as hers.

5. Lauren Myracle

Okay, I have a pretty complex relationship with her  Internet Girls series. I got like the first three books out of the library one day, and I was able to finish two of them before my parents realized I was way too young to be reading about high-school shenanigans. So the books got returned and I was left on a cliffhanger and I needed to know how it ended. Did Angel move to California??? Did that secondary character ever start dating that other secondary character?? I remember skimming the third book in the library, looking over like every 10 seconds in fear that my parents would find out. So I did read the third book, technically, but I remember none of it. I tried to pick it up again recently, for nostalgia’s sake, but I couldn’t do it. It was chatspeak in 2005. It was so cringy. But I smile every time I see one of the books in a bookstore.

6. Erin Morgenstern

How can I not include the author of my favorite book? She wrote The Night Circus, and I am eternally grateful.

7. Jaclyn Moriarty 

She was my first favorite author. I read all of her books. It was the first time I bought a book without even looking at the summary. I just saw her name and I was sold. I think I rated all of them 5 stars. I’m kind of scared to go back and reread them, in case they are definitely not 5 star books, so I think I’ll just leave them be for now. But she was the perfect author, in my middle-school brain’s opinion.

8. James Patterson

My second favorite author! I devoured the Maximum Ride series. And then I read them again. And then a third time. And then half of a fourth time. Anyway, it was my #1 series for a looooong time. It even beat out Harry Potter. I tried reading his other books, but none of them were that good. It was a weird situation, finding out the author of my favorite series is not actually that good of an author.

9. Sophie Kinsella

Her Shopaholic series were the first adult books I read. I remember sitting down in class in 8th grade, pulling out a hardback, adult book and thinking I was the most mature person in the room. (I was not)  But it introduced me to a world outside of middle grade and YA. It was a whole new experience for me. And the series was really good, which is a plus.

10. The Bookish Community

I know it’s a little cheesy, but all of you out there in this community making your own blog posts- you’re all authors, in a sense. And I am so grateful that this community exists and is so welcoming and I have my own little corner in it. (Okay, sappiness over.)

Hope you guys are enjoying a break before the chaos that is Thanksgiving Dinner. I only have one more class (which is 4 hours long…yikes) and then I’m going home!
